Pyongyang, March 1 (KCNA) -- Today marks the 93rd anniversary of the March First Popular Uprising, which added one page to the Korean nation's history of struggles against the foreign aggressors. At the time of the uprising the Japanese imperialists made frantic efforts to obliterate the Korean nation. Their crimes are still remembered by the Koreans. Ryang Jong Gum, a lecturer of the National House of Class Education, told KCNA: "The March First Popular Uprising was an eruption of pent-up wrath of the Koreans who had gone through all sorts of humiliation and maltreatment under the barbarous military rule of the Japanese imperialists for a decade. The uprising started at noon of March 1, 1919 when thousands of Pyongyangites gathered in a school on Jangdae Hill (at present) with the sound of a bell. They declared Korea an independent country before taking to streets to stage a fierce demonstration, chanting "Independence of Korea!" and "Japanese and their troops, go home!" In! Seoul, too, hundreds of thousands of people rose up in the demonstration, which shook the Japanese imperialists' colonial rule to its very foundation. For fear of such developments, the Japanese imperialists launched brutal crackdown on the uprisers, killing at least 100 000.
